DUBLIN, Ga. - When you're reporting to the cops about items
that were stolen from your home, it's not a good idea to inform
them of illegal contraband you may have had. Apparently, John
Randolph thought he might be able to get his stolen marijuana
back by telling police it was missing. When officers arrived
to his place, Randolph said a thief took four 'dime bags' of
marijuana, along with a .22-caliber pistol, a gold necklace
and $30 in change. To make sure he heard correctly, the
reporting officer asked Randolph again about the marijuana.
The school bus driver repeated what he said and then showed
the cop a small box on a bedroom dresser where he said he kept
the marijuana. And why did he confess? He said, "I was always
told to tell the truth." Strangely enough, Randolph was not
charged with a crime.

MOSCOW - Russian Parliament Member Vladislav Dyomin and two
of his aides were stopped on the street in the early morning
last week for erratic behavior. As soon as the first officer
stepped out of his car Dyomin screamed, "Beat the cops!" and
punched him in the face with his fist. The three then stole
golf clubs from a nearby sport-utility vehicle and set to on
the officers with gusto. The altercation didn't break up
until another police car arrived on the scene. Dyomin then
produced his Duma documents -- which give him immunity from
prosecution -- and walked away free. One of his aides fled
while the other was detained. Not surprisingly, the trio had
been drinking.

Pharmacist Martin Francom of Bremerton, Wash., was confronted
by an armed man demanding narcotics. Seeing "a moment of opportunity when he looked away," Francom grabbed a baseball bat from behind the counter and whacked the intruder in the head. "I refused to be a victim," Francom says. The man started shooting and Francom dropped the bat, so his daughter, Candice, 25, took up the cause. "I wanted to protect my Dad. I just picked up the bat and started hitting the guy over and over and over, probably 30 times," she said. "I thought about hitting him in the head, but if I caused some brain damage and he died, I didn't want that on me. I didn't want to be charged with anything."
(Seattle Times) ...She was, however, charged with an error: the guy obviously already had brain damage.

Margaret Summey, 64, was relaxing at home in Duncan, S.C., when Timothy Doyle Huitt, 43, allegedly broke into her home. "I went straight and got the .357 Magnum," Summey says. She shot
the intruder, and police ruled the shooting justified. Doyle was
found collapsed in the street with a gunshot wound in his leg. "I would have used a shotgun," Summey said afterward, "but I had just had new countertops done and I didn't want to tear up the kitchen."

A woman who pulled up to a stop sign in Warren, Mich.,
was surprised when a man opened her door, pretended to have a gun, and ordered her to give him money. She didn't pretend she had a gun: she pulled out her licensed 9mm pistol, pointed it at his face, and told him "If you're going to shoot me then do it, 'cause I'm definitely going to kill you." The man ran, and the unnamed 40-year-old woman was unharmed.
(Macomb Daily) ..."Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand- grenades are inherently democratic weapons. ...A simple weapon -- so long as there is no answer to it -- gives claws to the weak."

Canada's Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether prison inmates should be allowed to carry weapons. Inmate Jason Kerr,
26, argued that he had a right to carry a knife in prison because all the other inmates carried weapons. His knife came to light when another inmate attacked him and Kerr stabbed him to death. Court of Queen's Bench Justice Terry Clackson allowed Kerr's argument, ruling "it would seem that Mr. Kerr had his weapons, much like the world superpowers have their weapons, to deter first strike and defend against it should it become necessary." The Alberta Court of Appeal overturned, with Justice Ron Berger ruling such reasoning "is a recipe for anarchy within a prison setting." (Edmonton Sun) ...Which is exactly what the prisoners want.

The Hong Kong Tourist Board had finished all the details on its new tourist-luring campaign and bought space in multiple foreign magazines, but the rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome from mainland China into Hong Kong made attracting visitors less urgent. More than 100 people have died from SARS, a new mutant strain of pneumonia, mostly in China and Hong Kong. But it was too late to recall or change the ad, which is now coming out in magazines and promising that "Hong Kong will Take Your Breath Away." (London Guardian)

Sal Santana II, 12, of El Paso, Texas, asked another student if she would be his girlfriend. When she said no, he stuck his tongue out at her. Sexual harassment! screamed Magoffin Middle School administrators, who immediately suspended the boy for 3 days and scheduled hearings to see if they could expel him to an "alternative" school. Even if the school backs off, says his father Salvador, he will probably sue them. "It's got to be done because God knows how many other kids have been involved
in something like this," he said. (El Paso Times) ...More than you
think, sir. A lot more.
